Michaels sells these very inexpensive sketchbooks. On sale they're 2 for $5.00 for the 6"x8" ones and 2 for $10 for the 11"x9" ones. Very cheap, very non phobia instigating paper. The paper is not very smooth so it's more suitable for pencils. But for $2.50 my pens will adjust. I've tried watercolor (dryish brush) and fluid acrylics. Neither warps the pages. They dry flat. And watercolor brush pens don't bleed through the page. This double spread is watercolor.
I have moleskin phobia. They're too expensive to make mistakes. Last weekend I bought a few things at a garage sale. On the free table were 2 waterlogged moleskins. The covers were a mess so I just salvaged some of the pages. And here are 2 portraits.
